American
Society for Investigative Pathology
The mission of the
American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP) is to promote the
discovery, advancement, and dissemination of basic and translational
knowledge in experimental pathology and related disciplines. This is
achieved by fostering investigation into the pathogenesis, classification,
diagnosis, and manifestations of disease through meetings, publications, and
educational activities. The Society is headquartered in the Washington, DC
metropolitan area near the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.
Divisions and Affiliates
ASIP invites appropriate groups to become
semi-autonomous Divisions of the Society. Current Divisions are: The
Association for Pathology Informatics (API), the International Society for
Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), and the Pulmonary
Pathology Society (PPS). The Società Italiana di Patologia is an affiliate
society. ASIP is a cooperating society of the American Board of Pathology.
Meetings
Each year, ASIP meets together with other basic
biomedical research societies at the Experimental Biology Meeting. This
scientific meeting provides a forum for members to present their research
findings in oral and poster sessions; symposia provide perspectives on
advances in topic areas. Regular and emeritus members may sponsor abstracts.
The annual business meeting and award presentations also take place during
this meeting. The Divisions hold additional meetings each year. ASIP and its
affiliate the Società Italiana di Patologia will hold a joint meeting in
Italy in September 2008.
Publications
ASIP publishes The American Journal of Pathology (AJP),
providing a scholarly forum for the dissemination of information about
experimental and investigative pathology. This internationally recognized
research journal is published monthly. ASIP and the Association for
Molecular Pathology jointly publish The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics,
which is published bimonthly and is devoted to original papers on
translational research and validation of molecular discoveries in medicine
into the clinical diagnostic setting. Pathways, the ASIP newsletter,
is published quarterly and covers public affairs issues and society news.
ASIP supports an active website at
http://www.asip.org that lists upcoming scientific meetings and
announces news of interest to society members. A special feature on the
website is an adaptation of “Pathology: a Career in Medicine,” ICPI’s
popular brochure for students and the lay public. ASIP also hosts a jobs
board at
www.PathologyJobsToday.org.
Awards and Honors
ASIP recognizes individuals at different stages in
their careers. The Gold-Headed Cane is presented to a leader in academic
pathology for long-standing contributions to investigative pathology,
including meritorious research and outstanding teaching. The ASIP-Rous-Whipple
Award recognizes a distinguished investigator with a long-standing and
ongoing research program. The ASIP Outstanding Investigator Award for
meritorious research in experimental pathology is presented to a member who
is at an earlier career stage. The Society also honors pre- and
post-doctoral trainees who are presenting papers at the annual meeting with
Experimental Pathologist-in-Training Awards and Merit awards, trainee travel
awards and minority trainee travel awards.
Public Affairs
Through its membership in the Federation of American
Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and liaisons with other pathology
organizations, ASIP is committed to promoting quality research and
educational environments, including appropriate resources for research
support, peer review procedures, and graduate curriculum in pathology.
