NEW MEXICO STATE
OFFICE OF THE MEDICAL INVESTIGATOR
Forensic Pathology Fellowship

Program(s):

The Office of the Medical Investigator for the State of New Mexico offers an excellent opportunity for training in the field of forensic pathology. This one-year program concentrates on preparing the fellow to successfully complete requirements for board certification. To this end, the fellow will participate in the examination of approximately 2,100 cases under OMI jurisdiction and will personally perform approximately 250 medicolegal autopsies. The fellow will also accompany deputy medical investigators to scenes to learn the essential techniques of scene investigation. After a period of observation of expert testimony provided by the eight forensic pathologists, the fellow will be given the opportunity to testify first-hand. The program also offers instruction regarding key components of forensic medicine, specifically forensic anthropology and odontology, toxicology, and radiology. The OMI is generally considered one of the finest medicolegal death investigation centers in the country. It has the added advantages of an extensive electronic database and a full-time epidemiologist offering unique possibilities for multivariant analysis and research.
