PHENOPATH LABORATORIES
Advanced Immunohistochemistry & Molecular Pathology Fellowship

Program(s):

PhenoPath Laboratories offers an ACGME-accredited 1-year Immunohistochemistry Fellowship and is currently accepting applications for the 2010-2011 position, commencing July 1, 2010.

PhenoPath is a state-of-the-art reference pathology laboratory providing diagnostic immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), flow cytometry, and other molecular pathology services to pathologists across the United States. This busy clinical consultation service handles a wide variety of clinical problems in general surgical pathology and hematopathology. The most commonly addressed issues include breast cancer marker studies, carcinomas of unknown primary, confirmation and subclassification of lymphomas, characterization of undifferentiated malignant neoplasms, tumor prognostic markers, identification of viruses, and distinction of mesothelioma from adenocarcinoma.

The Fellow will have exposure to a broad range of techniques including IHC, ISH, FISH, flow cytometry, and PCR. As part of the Fellowship training program, there are weekly didactic sessions and journal clubs presented by Dr. Gown, other PhenoPath pathologists and guest speakers. The Fellow is responsible for evaluating incoming cases, determining the panel of antibodies to be employed, and participating in case sign-out. The day begins with a morning "Problem Case Conference," in which difficult cases from the previous day are reviewed by all pathologists on a multiheaded microscope. There are two daily case sign-outs, which occur on multiheaded microscopes, in which pathologists, technologists, and the Fellow all participate. Given the unusual nature of many of the cases, extensive use of textbooks, journal articles in the on-site library, and Medline searches are often required in the course of case workups. Numerous opportunities exist for participation in a wide variety of clinical research projects. The Fellow will be involved in submitting abstracts to scientific meetings (e.g., USCAP) and papers to peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements:

Applicants who have completed their pathology residency training, particularly with surgical pathology fellowship training, and who are AP board-certified, are highly desired. Graduates of foreign medical schools must have completed their certification by the ECFMG before application.

Facilities:

PhenoPath Laboratories is located in a state-of-the-art 16,500 sq. ft. facility in Seattle, in close proximity to downtown and the University of Washington. There are multiheaded teaching microscopes with imaging systems, and a complete pathology library on-site with extensive book and journal holdings, including access to numerous journals on-line.
